The UK only has four major networks – specifically EE, Three, Vodafone, and O2, and that might decrease to three soon, since Vodafone and Three are merging. But while these are the only companies with distinct coverage, other networks – known as MVNOs or mobile virtual network operators – also have access to this coverage.
In the case of Three, there are four MVNOs that offer essentially identical coverage, so if you want Three’s coverage but don’t want to be on Three itself, you have some options.
While their coverage is largely identical their perks aren’t, with these networks all offering things that Three doesn’t – while also lacking some of Three’s features. So for an overview of them and what they offer, read on.
Note though that now Three is merging with Vodafone, the two networks are beginning to share coverage in some locations, but that won’t necessarily apply to MVNOs right now, so in that sense coverage may differ a bit.
iD Mobile sells one, 12, and 24-month SIM Only plans, all of which give you the same core coverage as Three. These come with up to unlimited data, but if you choose a plan with limited data, you’ll also get data rollover, which is something that not many networks offer.
Beyond that, you can roam in 50 destinations at no extra cost, the network supports Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling, and you can choose between a physical SIM card and an eSIM.
Smarty is actually owned by Three, which means its coverage should be fully identical to Three’s – including the ability to roam onto Vodafone’s network in some areas.
However, Smarty’s plans also tend to be a lot cheaper than Three’s, and its 30-day rolling plans can be had with up to unlimited data, along with Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling, and inclusive EU roaming.
Smarty also offers eSIMs, and it has a few special ‘Data Discount’ plans, which refund you for any unused data.
Honest Mobile lets you choose between a 30-day and 12-month SIM Only plan, and you can get up to unlimited data.
The main selling point of this network though is that it rewards loyalty by dropping your prices over time, with a maximum discount of 30%.
Beyond that, you can roam for free in the EU (but only for up to five days per trip), and the network offers Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling, and eSIMs.
Superdrug Mobile sells a handful of 30-day rolling plans, topping out at unlimited data. But if you pick a lower data allowance then you’ll also get data rollover.
Beyond that, the other significant selling point of Superdrug Mobile is that you get double Health & Beautycard points on all Superdrug shopping, along with access to exclusive Superdrug offers and discounts, so this is a strong choice for frequent Superdrug shoppers.
Its plans also include EU roaming, so you won’t have to pay extra to use your plan abroad.
