Sky Mobile has launched a notable SIM Only plan, as it’s one that you can get for just £1 per month, making it just about the cheapest SIM Only plan available in the UK.
For that, you’re getting 1GB of data, which isn’t much but could still be enough for certain users and purposes.
Below, we’ve detailed where 1GB might come in handy, what you can really do with that amount of data, and everything else you need to know about this bargain plan.
Sky Mobile’s £1 SIM Only plan doesn’t just give you 1GB of data, it also comes with unlimited calls and texts, making this especially useful for anyone still making lots of use of their minutes and SMS/RCS messages.
You’re getting O2’s coverage in the UK, and you can also roll over any unused data each month and keep access to it for up to a year – though of course with such a small data limit to begin with you’re unlikely to have much to roll over.
If you don’t want to use that rolled over data yourself, you can share it with other SIMs on your account, or exchange it for money off a new device or accessory.
Sky Mobile also lets you tether, and it offers Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling, eSIMs, and spending caps. Plus, you can stream content from Sky apps like Sky Go without it using up your data — though you will need a relevant Sky subscription.
There are some less good things you should be aware of before choosing this plan. For one, Sky Mobile will credit check you before approving your application.
For another, this comes with a 12-month contract, so you don’t have the flexibility of being able to cancel whenever you want. You can move to a different plan at any time in those 12 months, but Sky claims that you’ll lose the data offer if you do this — presumably meaning that the price will be higher if you choose to return to this plan.
For reference, Sky Mobile used to charge £8 per month for 1GB of data, so that might be the price you end up with if you switch away from this plan and then back to it. Sky Mobile also notes that “data plan price may increase during your new minimum term.”
Also, roaming costs extra on Sky Mobile, coming in at £2 per day in most destinations.
1GB of data won’t go very far. With that, you could for example web browse and check your email for around 40 minutes per day combined, though this wouldn’t leave any data for anything else.
Other ways you could use that data would be around 20 minutes of social media per day or roughly 35 minutes of music streaming on standard quality. If you’re more into video, you should be able to stream one or two movies, though all of these figures depend on the specific services and quality settings, so can vary.
Still, unless you’re not online much or use Wi-Fi the majority of the time, this is unlikely to be enough for you as your primary phone.
So who is this plan for? Well it could be a good fit for children and teenagers, who you might want to be able to reach but not wish for them to be able to waste their days on TikTok and the like.
This could also be useful as a second SIM card — one you use when you don’t want to give out your main number for example, or as a backup.
And it could work well if your primary interest is in minutes and texts, since it comes with an unlimited allowance of those.
There will also be some people who mostly use Wi-Fi, or whose data use is largely restricted to Sky’s own apps (which don’t affect your data allowance). If you fit into that camp, then 1GB might be fine for you.
