Giffgaff is an O2 MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), which means that it shares O2’s coverage and infrastructure – so wherever O2 has 5G and 4G coverage, Giffgaff should too.

Giffgaff is a well-regarded network and it sells a selection of both 18-month and 30-day rolling SIM Only plans, and these come with up to unlimited data.

But as well as data, minutes, and texts, its plans also come with some extras. You can learn more about those below, along with whether there are any speed caps or fair usage restrictions on its unlimited data plans.

Is roaming included?

Yes, Giffgaff allows all customers to use their allowances in the EU at no extra cost, but there’s a 5GB fair usage limit for data when using it abroad. So even if you have an unlimited data plan, you won’t be able to use more than 5GB per month when using inclusive roaming.

Are there any speed restrictions?

No, Giffgaff’s unlimited data plans include 5G speeds at no extra cost, with no restrictions on the speeds you can achieve, so the only limits will be what your phone and the network are capable of.

Are there any fair usage restrictions?

Giffgaff states that you should avoid using around 650GB of data twice within a six-month period, and that additionally you should avoid regularly tethering to 12 or more devices.

Neither of those fair use limits should be an issue for most people, but they’re worth being aware of.

What other benefits are included?

Giffgaff’s plans also allow you to tether, and you can make use of Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling. Plus, you can optionally have an eSIM, and Giffgaff also operates a Payback scheme, which rewards you for referring people to Giffgaff and for helping out the community on its forums.

What other networks should you consider?

One obvious alternative to Giffgaff is O2, since the two networks have the same coverage. O2’s plans tend to cost more, but some let you roam more widely, and some also give you subscriptions to a streaming service or similar.

Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile also share O2’s coverage, and are often competitively priced.
