There was a time when unlimited data was a rarity, but these days it’s something that most networks offer. However, some still don’t, and those that do have varying prices, restrictions, and fair use limits.

O2 is among the many networks that do offer unlimited data SIM Only plans though, and these are available on 1, 12, and 24-month durations. So below, we’ve detailed the specifics of unlimited data on these plans, along with other key features of O2 that you should know about, and alternative networks that you might want to consider instead for your unlimited data needs.

Is roaming included?

All of O2’s SIM Only plans come with inclusive roaming – including its unlimited data plans. You can roam across the EU at no extra cost, though there’s a 25GB monthly roaming limit in Europe, so you can’t use unlimited data when abroad in these places.

But some of O2’s unlimited data SIM Only plans let you roam even further afield at no extra cost, topping out at 123 worldwide destinations.

At the time of writing, these are called ‘Ultimate’ plans, while ‘Plus’ plans allow for roaming in 75 global destinations, and ‘Classic’ plans limit you to Europe – unless you pay extra.

When roaming outside Europe on one of these plans you won’t be subject to a 25GB limit, but instead your speeds will top out at 2Mbps.

Are there any speed restrictions?

O2 won’t cap your speeds in the UK, so with 5G widely available on the network you can expect to experience some very high-speed downloads and uploads, assuming you have a 5G phone (which most modern ones are).

However, speeds will be capped at 2Mbps when roaming in many places outside the EU.

Are there any fair usage restrictions?

While these plans are listed as being ‘unlimited’, they do have some restrictions, as O2 states that you shouldn’t use 650GB of data or more twice within a six-month period, and you shouldn’t regularly tether to 12 or more devices.

However, these restrictions are unlikely to be an issue for most people, with 650GB a month being functionally unlimited for personal use, and it probably being unlikely that you’d be in a situation where you wanted to tether to 12 or more devices at once.

Beyond that, there are also fair usage restrictions when roaming, with there being a 25GB limit in Europe. If you’re on a plan that lets you roam beyond Europe then your data won’t be limited in those places, but your speeds will be capped at 2Mbps. Though that should still be fast enough to stream content on your phone without any buffering.

What other benefits are included?

O2’s unlimited data SIM Only plans also include unlimited minutes and texts, and if you’re on a 12 or 24-month Classic plan then you’ll additionally be able to get a free, 3-month subscription to Disney+ Standard, Amazon Prime, Amazon Music, Audible, or Cafeyn.

On a Plus plan, that’s upped to six months, and on an Ultimate plan, you get a subscription to Amazon Prime, Disney+ Premium, or Cafeyn for the life of your contract.

All plans additionally come with Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling, spending caps, the option of an eSIM, and access to O2 Priority, which is packed full of rewards and discounts from other brands, plus early access to gig tickets.

And you can also get a 20% discount on additional plans, making it more affordable to have your whole family on O2.

What other networks should you consider?

If you want unlimited data on another network that has the same coverage as O2, then consider Giffgaff, Sky Mobile, or Tesco Mobile, as these networks all share O2’s coverage and offer SIM Only plans with unlimited data.

Their terms and perks differ though. For example, Sky Mobile’s SIM Only plans all last 12 months, but you’re free to switch to a different plan at any time during the contract. This network also charges for roaming.

Tesco Mobile offers 12 and 24-month unlimited data SIM Only plans with inclusive roaming, and Giffgaff also offers free roaming (though only up to 5GB per month) on unlimited data SIM Only plans with either a 1 or 18-month contract.
